Boy faces sex assault charges JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (AP) A 12-year-old boy has been charged with pinching the groin of a 10-year-old girl and fondling another 10-year-old girl while at school, authorities said.

Capt. David Story of the Washington County Sheriff's Department said the boy is charged with two counts of sexual assault. The girls' mothers say school officials were irresponsible for not better protecting the girls at Gray School. School officials deny that. One of the girls said the boy became abusive the day after they began going steady in September.

"He said now that we were going together we had to do it have sex," the girl told the Johnson City Press. After she refused, the boy became abusive, pinching her and bruising her groin. The other girl claimed she was grabbed and fondled by the boy while she was held from behind by a second boy. The school suspended both boys. A hearing has been scheduled for Jan.

31 in Juvenile Court. Air Force homes in on 'amplifier' COOLEEMEE, N.C. (AP) Roger Spillman paid $75 for what he thought was a radio amplifier at a salvage auction. He never got it to work, nor did he get a refund. There may be some consolation in knowing the contraption could have survived a nuclear attack.

Turns out the device is a $363,735 piece of military hardware, part of a planned global communications system designed to survive nuclear war, the Winston Journal reports. Spillman had turned to Isabel Ledford, a local ham-radio operator, who called the amplifier's maker, Raytheon for an instruction manual. Raytheon employees asked for the serial numbers, then called the Air Force. The Air Force showed up with a court order and reclaimed the device. Thefts of donkeys surpass murders HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) Zimbabweans stole more donkeys last year, but the number of murders dropped by almost 200, police said.

A crime report issued in Harare blamed a jump in donkey thefts from 473 cases in 1992 to 820 last year on a drought that killed donkeys, prized by peasant farmers as work animals. There were 576 murders in the nation of 10.4 million people in 1993, down from 773 the year before, while the number of house break-ins, the most common crime, dipped slightly to about 34,600 investigated incidents, the report said. JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) Cherokee graves are being looted because the U.S. Forest Service is not enforcing laws protecting sites, American Indian Movement activists say.

The AIM members also object to the Forest Service allowing farming on land they feel is an Indian burial ground. Human bones and potsherds are sometimes discovered when the land is plowed, according to AIM member Blanche Whiteface of Bluff City. "How would they feel if I went to a white man's burial ground and had it dug asked Charles Thunderhawk of Richmond, Va. "We don't take this lightly. These are our ancient ones and they must be protected as we would expect someone to protect us when it comes time to return to the earth." A Forest Service archeologist says the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation approved managing the site as a hayfield.

Norman Dean Jefferson, a Forest Service archeologist, said he knew of people digging sandy soil along the riverbanks for their gardens but didn't know of any problems with grave desecrations. The site is considered a Cherokee village and is on the National Register of Historic Places and the state Division of Archaeology's list of cultural resource sites. It is along the Nolichucky River in Washington County. Thunderhawk said that if the site is not better protected, the AIM would rally protesters. He said someone tried to sell him grave goods from this area last June.

The former Cherokee village has not been extensively investigated, but was apparently inhabited from 1400 to 1600, according to Suzanne Hoyal, a state Division of Archaeology historian. The site is believed to have covered about 37 acres. About 24 acres of the site is leased by a tomato farming operation, according to Jefferson. The farming permit prohibits farmers from disturbing the soil below the plow line where archeological evidence is most likely to be found. Jefferson said the Forest Service plans to conduct further archeological investigations at the site.

He said the farming permit might not be renewed when it expires in the spring. Gun found on second-grader NASHVILLE (AP) A secondgrade student was placed in juvenile detention after being found with an unloaded 25-caliber pistol at his elementary school. Investigators said the 8-yearold student at Kirkpatrick Elementary School carried the pistol to school Thursday in a backpack. School officials said a classmate reported that the boy had the weapon. Another student turned in a bullet he said he found in a restroom.
